Ace Race is

2008 Ace Race2008 Ace Race2008 Ace Race2008 Ace Race2008 Ace Race

The Race Is On, again!

Each autumn, disc golfers from around the world gather at their local courses for one purpose: to throw aces! No putting, no approaching... just runnin' at the chains.

To add to the challenge and excitement, players all throw the same model disc: a brand new, never-seen-before Discraft prototype disc that is introduced each year especially for the One Disc Ace Race. All players get one of these discs to throw, and one to collect. You'll be among the first players to ever throw this new disc design.  The player with the most aces after 36 holes is declared the winner. In case of ties, the number of metal hits is used as a tie breaker. If a tie persists, a closest to the pin contest is then used to determine the event winner.

Format:  Two rounds of 18 holes, one throw per hole per player.

When:  September 6th, 2008  Opens at 10AM and goes all day long.  Please come anytime during the day to play your rounds.  The event will end at about 6PM.  Your two rounds of the Ace Race will take about 1 hour, so you don’t have to stay all day.  However, we will have many other free side games to play.  So, if you want to stay, there is a lot to do.

Course: Dalaiwood (a really, really short version of the “A” course)

Entry fee: $25

Hey everybody!

WOW! What a day we had for the Ace Race. Welcomed by blue skies, perfect temps and a slight breeze we couldn't have had a better day to play golf. The course was ready and all we needed were people to show up and play the game.....and did they ever show up.

With last years turnout around 60 we had ordered 75 packs for the event. This turned out to be the biggest underestimation in our career as TD's. When the dust finally settled after 8 hours of playing we had had over 130 people go through the course trying to rings those chains for the title of Ace Race champion. What a blast it was to have that many folks out at Dalaiwood!

The disc turned out to be an overwhelming success as almost everyone found it easy to throw, had a great feel in your hand and held an awesome line. Not to mention that this thing really goes and goes without killing it. I see it as a being a VERY popular mid range for those that don't seem to be able to keep a midrange flying straight when they need it. That being said I was able to both hyzer it and turn it over and it held nicely both ways. It does have some knurling (yeah, look it up in a dictionary) on the underside of the lip which may help it disrupt the air like the dimples on a golf ball and hold a straighter line longer. Who knows, I just know it works.

The winner was a
White River local John Wills who was the only person to card TWO aces in the same day. From what I understand he only had one ace in his career before so we are talking a great day on the course for this guy. I also understand from his crew that he is not supposed to play as an amateur in ANY event EVER again. Dang, tough crowd when your own friends pull out the sandbagger card. Doug took home a brand new bag filled with an entire set of Discraft plastic valued at $300. I hope he tries some of it because the stuff really does work!

Also rans included:

Doug Whitney-one ace and one metal
Jarod Job-one ace
Tim Coye-one ace
Eric Mesford-one ace
Wade Rosin-one ace
and special award to
Lea Bessler-first ace of the day and six months pregnant to boot. Not even born yet and the kid has his first ace (it's going to be a boy!).

Eric Mesford was the oldest to ace (I hear he's actually only 66 and a half) and Doug Whitney was the youngest to ace. In the side games, Tim "I can't putt" Martin wins the Hard putting contest and Westsider Paul Wright wins the easy putting contest. Best score on the Furious Five throwdown goes to Dalaiwood Local Brent "That Huber Kid" Huber. He's like 15 and he's gonna beat down a lot of people in the near future and you won't even see it coming. On the Half Mile hole a new standard was set when Josh Kendoll got up and down from behind a wall of trees (we're talking there was no way possible to get through these trees) to shoot an incredible 12. The record stood at 13 and we think that 11 is the best that will ever be shot. That being said, 12 is awesome to say the least.

Now that it is all over I would like to congratulate all of the winners, but also all of the people who tied with me in hitting absolutely no aces or metal but had an absolute blast. I would also like to thank my sponsor Discraft for making this event possible and making it such a great deal for only $20. Right here is where I thank the person who really runs the event while I just talk a lot, and that is my wife Jeanne. If you ever want to run a great tournament, simply marry a lady who is as awesome and supportive of me as Jeanne is and you will have no problem.

The final thanks goes out to you, the participants. You all made this happen and you were great sports about everything. For all of you that took half packages so that more people could enjoy the day, you were all champs and displayed the character that I think can make our sport awesome. Thank you for making it possible for so many to enjoy the day when we had so badly underestimated the excitement this event had created. Without you it would not have been possible. Your packages will be completed ASAP and with much thanks!

Later,

Scott Papa
